Money, money, money, money…. money! I just had to start singing because this week’s Fearless, fabulous boss lady is none other than the CleverGirl, herself: Bola Onada Sokunbi!

Bola Onada Sokunbi is a money coach, business strategist and founder of Clever Girl Finance, a platform that empowers and educates women to make the best financial decisions for their current and future selves.

Clever Girl Finance inspires women to pursue their dreams of financial independence in order to live life on their own terms.

What’s your story?

My name is Bola Onada Sokunbi and I recently launched CleverGirlFinance.com as a resource to empower women to take charge of their personal finances and build wealth. Money is something that I’ve always talked about with my friends – from saving, investing and business to retirement, cost per wear and saving for kids amongst many other money topics.

Growing up, my father would always tell me “penny wise, pound foolish”, “Always hold your own”, “Never be a liability on a man”. My father was the bread winner until our family went through a financial downturn and my mother stepped in to help financially. My mother, was and still is, very savvy, hardworking and was always making plans and putting money aside – I aspired to be like her. She paid for my international college education in cash (this included my books, rent and other needs) and would not allow me to get any student loans, something I will forever be grateful to her for.

Unfortunately not all my mother’s friends were the same, some relied completely on their husbands without being aware of their family finances and the end result was always a sad story. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve started to see the cycle of my mother’s generation of women and how they relate to money repeat itself in my age group. The one reoccurring theme I see with us as women is that we tend to shy away from the whole money conversation or we don’t care as much as we should. And this needs to change. This is the driving force behind Clever Girl Finance.

As women achieve greater heights of independence and accomplishments, having a firm handle on our everyday finances, retirement plans and wealth creation is an absolutely necessity. Personal finance should not be intimidating. We need to understand that money is a tool that, if utilized correctly, can get us where we really want to be without having to rely on anyone else.

What kind of boss lady are you?

I’m fierce, hardworking and fun. I know exactly what I want and that it will take sacrifice to get there. I don’t compromise on who I am and I’m proud of that.

What’s your favorite thing about being a boss lady?

My favorite thing about being a boss lady is being able to do what I’m truly passionate about and fulfill my purpose.

What is your #1 tip for success?

Rolled into one sentence, my #1 tip for success is to stay focused, think positive, put in the hard work and find mentors. I’m a testament of the fact that these things make all the difference!

What are your big dreams and goals?

Business wise long term I want to be a known voice in the personal finance world for women. I also want to own my own wealth and asset management firm. In the short term however, my goals are to create awareness and monetize my brand, Clever Girl Finance.

Personally, my biggest goal will be raising my children the right way and being the best wife and mother that I can be. That is where my heart lies.

What is the lesson you wished you learned sooner?

One lesson I wish I learned sooner is that stressing out about things I had no control over is a complete waste of my time. In the past, I would stress out so much that I would give myself headaches and then as a result I would end up setting myself back further because I couldn’t work with a headache. I would stress if things weren’t going the way I planned or if people I relied on where procrastinating or not able to deliver. Now if it doesn’t work out, I vent, take a deep breath and move on to figuring out how to make things work.

Do you have a morning or daily ritual?

I start my morning with prayer. Even if it’s just me saying “Thank you God”. I’m a firm believer that we have the power to set the tone for our day regardless of what might happen that day. It’s all about our response to outcomes so I try my very best to maintain a positive outlook from the moment I wake up.

Because I have small children (twin toddlers), I’m up at around 5. 30 am which is when they wake up and I stay up late, after the go to bed, until around midnight so I can work out and get things done in my home and for my business. As a result, I’ve gradually built up a caffeine addiction!

I also have my bible plans: I try to read in bed before I fall asleep and I have a series of positive affirmations I keep on my phone that I look over several times again.

Finally, as part of my daily ritual, I listen to money and business podcasts every day!

How do you avoid overwhelm?

I try to keep the big picture of where I’d like to be in the background, and in the foreground I focus on the steps I need to take in order to get closer to my dream. It’s also helpful that I’m a big planner and list maker; I prioritize my day based on my lists and if for whatever reason I cannot accomplish some of the plans I made for the day, it gets shifted to the next day and I’m ok with it.

Another big way I avoid getting overwhelmed is by reaching out to my “support team”. These are friends of mine and fellow entrepreneurs who are in different stages of their business. They help me put things in perspective and keep me motivated.

I also constantly remind myself that Rome wasn’t built in a day – it was built one brick at a time, one day at a time.
