I bet you are thinking about those 20 lbs. you dedicated to melting off last January that didn’t quite seem to go away all year. Nope! We’re here to talk through a few do’s and don’ts when it comes to building a better brand in 2016! Ready?!

Do Complete a brand assessment!

Let’s turn the mirror on you for a moment, a bit of self-reflection if you will. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Was my brand visually cohesive?
  • Was my audience confused about the product or service(s) I offer?
  • What could I have done differently to attract more of my desired target audience?
  • Where did most of my business inquires derive from? Website? Social Media? Networking?
  • How effective was the user experience for my current and potential clients?

Asking yourself the above questions will naturally trigger many other areas that you may need to work on in the New Year to build a more cohesive brand, so go if you are feeling a bit apprehensive, start small! You will be surprised about how quickly your assessment will develop.

Don’t Ignore your audience!

You’d be surprised at how many business owners, large and small, do not listen to what their customers want and need. Constructive criticism is essential for the success of your business, so who better to listen to than the men and women who pay you! If you are a bit nervous about the idea of asking your client face-to-face, surveys are a great way to lessen the blow of your critique. Typeform.com offers a free service that allows you to create a few different types of customized forms and surveys (additional services and add-ons available with monthly subscription). Take a look at the snazzy form I submit to all of my clients after each phase of their branding phases!

Do Take your brand identity to the next level!

What’s more refreshing than clearing out the old and bringing in the new? Isn’t that what the New Year is all about?! If you are feeling a bit underwhelmed with the visual presence of your brand, add a pop of color or in my case a pop of rose gold!! You may not be like me, the insomniac who scrolls  through Pinterest at the end of a long day to unwind but honestly during the creation of my brand, this practice, gave me a clearer vision on how I wanted to present myself. Creating different boards or simply taking a screen shot of the images that screamed, “Girl, this is totally you!” will slowly help you curate a solid  inspiration library.

Tip: Make a party out of it! Gather up your old magazines, some great wine and invite a few over and host a mood board happy hour! I can’t think of a better way to bring in 2016 than with good company, better drinks and a new vision for your business.
