12 Things Successful People Do Differently

These 12 things, as simple as they are, separate the uber successful from, well the rest of us. Here's how you can join those numbers... and it's much easier than you would think!

Avoid Being Perfect

Gold cannot be pure, and people cannot be perfect. ~Chinese Proverb

Hallelujah! I’m so happy to have been given this permission and I, love, extend this permission to you. STOP! Stop trying so hard to impress the world by being perfect. I promise you, no matter how hard you try, if perfection is your goal, darlin, you will fail. You can never please everyone. So, start by pleasing yourself. If you could put yourself in your Dream Client’s  shoes.

Focus on Small Continuous Improvements

Perfection will be the end of any man. So great thing we’re women, huh? Just kidding! But really, perfection will only make you want to scream your brains out! There will always be something else you want to do better, especially with the creative nature you have.

I know I’m always seeing something that I want to be different or I’ll get inspiration and want to change the entire site but instead you need to focus on getting whatever it is that you’re doing out there and improving upon it.

So you might start with website 1.0 and go to 1.5. Then 2.0 and so on. You want to just continuously improve whatever it is that you’re doing instead of focusing on getting it perfect before you get it out there. You never know when someone’s going to need what you are creating and if you take forever trying to get it “perfect” then you could miss that opportunity to help or inspire that person.

Keep It Simple

Keeping it simple applies across the board. From business to everyday life, applying this principle will help keep things, well, simple. So often when we get excited about something, we tend to go a little overboard. wanting to make things the “best” what we forget is that the best choice is often the simplest choice. Instead of trying to create a product or launch with absolutely everything you can think of, keep it simple. Break it down. What is the least you can do to deliver the results you want? Keeping things simple and focused will make the experience a better one for everyone involved. One of my favorite sayings for any kind of customer experience is to under promise and over deliver. When you simply and clearly set expectations and deliver over and above what you set, boom! Happy people all around.

Productive Not Busy

It’s so easy to say “I’m doing so much at the same time. That must be a good thing. I can multitask, it’s a skill!” But that train of thought is soooo wrong. Half completed work is just as useless as no work at all. Until you have something that is ready to ship, ready to post, or ready to sell. You have half done junk.

Imagine if a car company only had 2/3s of a million cars completed. How much money could they make from it? Not a dime… unless they scrapped it. Instead try to give yourself set time limits to focus on whatever matter at hand and get it done!

For example. I sit for one hour every day and focus on either Instagram, Facebook, or blog posts. Sometimes I give myself a longer time if I’m in the zone but during that time I don’t do anything else until I get whatever series of posts completed. Productive trumps busy every time.

Measure and track your progress

If you don’t keep track of your results, you are wasting your time. It really is that simple. Every post, product offering, marketing campaign, email should be geared to one central purpose. To bring you more engagement, potential customers and money.

Getting someone from random to happy client takes time and energy. That time and energy has a price. Whether you outsource the task to a team member or to a virtual assistant, or take on the task yourself, time is money. If you aren’t making the most of that time by gearing everything towards sales, where is the justification? How do you know if it’s working?

The answer is analytics. Email list servers, websites and most social media have analytics available. Are you checking them? Do you know what they mean? Do you know how to make changes to change your results? I know it’s not the most fun to stare at numbers, but if you are in business to make serious change in the world, knowing your numbers will help you do that. If you have a message you are passionate about not knowing how to increase your audience is as good as yelling in a dark room hoping people wandered in.

Don’t let the analytics paralyze you. Know them for when you try something new or if you are evaluating but don’t let the numbers control your life and suck your creativity. They are there to educate, not to take personally.

Set Goals

Big or small, goals show you the way. Goals keep you focused. But goals also help you say “no” to the things that don’t contribute to the way you want to go. Of course you have business goals and numbers, but what about your personal goals?

Do you want to travel, become location independent, learn new skills, write a book? Personal goals enrich your life, fuel your creativity, and are what you got into business in the first place for. When you make goals, make sure  they are for you as much as for your business.

Make logical and informed decisions

Many have great luck with going solely with intuition to rocket their businesses off the charts. That “luck” is a combination of information and logic. Gather all the available information and actually MAKE the decisions.

This is all about not being overwhelmed and paralyzed by facts or stats. Use the information to support your decision.  The next step is to…..

Take decisive and immediate action

You did the research, now make the decision and take action. Being stuck in indecisiveness will only paralyze you and your business. Don’t be that girl. 😉

Stay positive and learn from mistakes

The secret to life is this: You are alive: living, breathing, moving, changing, evolving, getting better, and better.

You are human, you make mistakes. What you do next is what defines you. Learning from the mistakes is what makes you better. The best inventions failed hundreds of times before they were “finished” and then others come and improve on them. So fail often, learn a ton, and try to learn from other’s mistakes too.

 Work outside the comfort zone

When you get uncomfortable, AMAZING things happen. Your creativity piques, your enthusiasm, passion, heart… all of them come back to life. So try something new, go somewhere you never have, try a new point of view. Get out of your own way and get your creative juices pumping!

 Maintain Balance in Your Life

Believe it or not, balance is the point of starting your own business. If you can’t choose when and where you work, that’s no better than working for someone else. If you want to work from the time your eyes open til the time they close **guilty** then great that’s your choice. But if you want to take a few days or weeks off, to do something that will benefit you on an entirely different level, then you should be able to.

That kind of balance may not be something you are looking for, or you may not have the team resources to leave your business like that. So the balance is on a smaller scale. Finding time to spend with your loved ones, yourself, and work may be difficult at first, or during launch times. Schedule it. Make sure you communicate with your team or your clients what your boundaries, or “office hours,” are.

Spend Time With the Right People

This one is super important to me. Negative, toxic people are not what you want to waste your dreams on. You’ll hear me say over and over to “protect your dreams.” Your dreams are a part of your soul. The last thing you need is for a Negative Nancy or Debbie Downer to take a piece of your soul and crush it. When you find that thing in life that sparks your passion and makes you glow from the inside out, you want to make sure you take special care of it.

If you don’t have friends with their own businesses (which is rare) find virtual friends. Social media makes for amazing opportunities to expand your reach. Join one or many, just get active and find other lady bosses who can support you and bounce ideas off of.  Of course, you are always welcome to join Pretty + Profesh’s exclusive group of Fabulous, Fearless, Lady Bosses :).
